Author Biography
Born in December 1865 in Mumbai, Joseph Rudyard Kipling is regarded as a major British author; his children's books are classics of children's literature. His early years were spent in Mumbai, where he first developed his deep love for India - the people, the culture, the animals and the landscape. This is where he got the inspiration for his most famous characters - Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and Shere Khan. In the early 1890s, he and his American wife settled in Vermont, USA, where two of his children were born, and where he began to write The Jungle Book. Kipling returned to the UK in 1896 and Just So Stories was first published by Macmillan in 1902. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He died in 1936 and is buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey, London.
