Description

When my granny was younger she crossed rivers and mountain ranges, explored jungles and towering cities. Now her legs won't carry her much further than the door. But she still travels - and sometimes she takes me with her... Granny has travelled all over the world, to India, Egypt, China and Peru. And she still travels - in her mind and in her stories. The grown-ups say Granny doesn't know where she is, but her grandchild can't wait to go on another adventure. "Where are we going now, Granny?" A sensitive introduction to old-age confusion and dementia, through the loving and imaginative relationship between Granny and her grandchild - and their colourful journeys. "Such a gentle, positive and fascinating way of introducing a child to dementia" Tessa Gutteridge, Director YoungDementia UK "This book is fabulous and I know it will be really helpful" April Dobson, head of Dementia Innovation, Abbeyfield Society

Reviews

"This story is told from the perspective of a child whose grandmother has dementia. Her grandmother used to travel the world, but these days she hardly ever leaves her chair. The child adores her grandmother's stories, shared facts, and imagined and remembered travels. Granny and her grandchild enjoy imagining the wonders of the world, from Paris and New York to Delhi and Jerusalem. The endnote includes information on dementia and how many people it affects in the UK on average. The painted illustrations are bold, beautifully depicting the vibrant environments described in Granny's travels. VERDICT A child-friendly introduction to dementia." * School Library Journal * "A lovely book for sharing and learning about life." * Carousel * "Children need to cherish their grandparents, who may develop dementia, and this picture book tackles that issue effectively." * Kirkus Reviews * "Seeing (granny's) world through the eyes of her grandchild helps us to understand her situation in a gentle, caring way that would be a great support to families living through this difficult phase of family life." * English 4 - 11 * "This really got to my heart ... This book is described as a 'sensitive introduction to old-age confusion through the loving and imaginative relationship between Granny and her grandchild'. I'd agree with that." * Devon Midweek Herald * "On the surface a vibrant picture book about destinations throughout the world, told by an adventurous Grandmother, this is actually a book about dementia....An interesting, important addition." * Minerva Reads * "Dementia is often difficult enough for adults to comprehend, but what about younger people? Journalist and author Juliet Rix has written an excellent new book to help explain what can be a confusing topic for children." * Age UK * "Perfect for introducing kids to the idea of dementia...It 'normalizes' dementia in such a positive way." -- PK Beville, US Geriatrics specialist & Inventor of the Virtual Dementia Tour "Such a gentle, positive and fascinating way of introducing a child to dementia, this will prove valuable to the many families where dementia affects the lovely relationship between grandparent and child." -- Tessa Gutteridge, Director YoungDementia UK "A really positive way of educating children about dementia - great work!" -- Prof. Chris Ballard, Dean, Exeter University Medical School "A sensitive issue, handled with great insight and compassion, helping children to gain a perspective on the troubling issue of dementia...as this book so touchingly shows, children are very accepting." * Parents in Touch * "This book is fabulous and I know it will be really helpful." -- April Dobson, Head of Dementia Innovation, Abbeyfield Society
