Description

A few comics portrayed the horrors of war but no blatantly anti-war stories were known to exist--until now! Buried in rare comics published during the Cold War were powerful war, fantasy, and sci-fi stories that strongly condemned war and the bomb, boldly calling for peace. There's even a tale condemning the building of a wall to keep out aliens--from outer space! Exciting action stories compellingly relevant to the world today!

Author Biography

Steve Ditko is best known as the artist and co-creator, with Stan Lee, of the Marvel characters Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. He began his professional career in 1953, working in the studio of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as an inker. During the late 1950s he began working for Atlas Comics, a forerunner of Marvel Comics, where he continued to contribute work in the 1960s. He went on to work for Charlton and DC Comics where he created or co-created such characters as the Question, the Creeper, the Changing Man, and Hawk and Dove. Ditko was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994.

Reviews

"Although these comics evolved in the Cold War-era culture, they remain informative and timely for today's readers. While some are dark and others are a bit kitschy, the comics emphasize love and the hope for a shared and peaceful future." -Comicsverse "Powerful and timely!" -Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize winner "Groundbreaking... surprisingly unflinching... nothing short of incredible... poignant...transcends the anti-warsentiment and really get into the emotions and distrust that drive wars... it truly is a fascinating assortment of ideas... as a historical record, this anthology is invaluable." -Adventures in Poor Taste "A vivid, glorious restoration!" -Doom Rocket "Some of the best historical collections of comics right now are coming from Yoe Books/IDW. Craig Yoe is bringing a really thorough, but creative, eye to these collections, and "The Unknown Anti-War Comics!" is no exception. This collection reprints long out of print stories that dared to be blatantly anti-war at a time when that was not a popular position to be taking, especially in comics." -Multiversity Comics "Sure, most comics readers are familiar with the war comics genre--but what Yoe harvests here is the complete opposite of that. It's a collection of classic anti-war comics (often masked as fantasy or science-fiction stories) from an era when holding such a position could quite possibly get your ass kicked." -Large Hearted Boy
