Description

I Open the Door...contains nine interconnected stories, all of which begin and end with opening a door. The young author/illustrators at the 2016 Spinifex Writing Camp were encouraged to let their imaginations run wild, and the result is a book that will simply take your breath away. Prepare to be intrigued, surprised, fearful and delighted as you turn the pages to follow the adventures of what happens when a door is opened. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation's motto of 'Reading Opens Doors' became the inspiration for the stories that were written at the 2016 Spinifex Writing Camp held once again at Tjuntjuntjara, this year with mentors Ann James, Gregg Dreise and Judy Watson.

Author Biography

The authors featured in this book are from the 2016 Spinifex camp: Jamal from Laverton; Shakira and Lori from Menzies; Daisy, Georgina and Jonas from Mt Margaret; Tarlisha and Adelle from Tjuntjuntjara; and Jemima and Emma from Fairbank Grammar School in Melbourne. The children were joined by Ann James, whose playful approach to illustrating is reflected in her award-winning books, which include Margaret Wild's Lucy Goosey and The Midnight Gang, Christine Harris's It's a Miroocool!, and her own Bird and Bear stories; Gregg Dreise, who is a proud Kamilaroi Murri, a teacher and the author/illustrator of Silly Birds, Kookoo Kookaburra and Mad Magpie; and Judy Watson, who is graphic designer and the illustrator of more than 20 children's books including Frances Watt's Goodnight Mice, winner of the Prime Minister's Literary Award (Children's Fiction) in 2012, and Katrina Germein's Thunderstorm Dancing, a CBCA Notable Book for 2016
