But nothing can stand in the way of love, and Julia and Daniel escape Richard and his moneyed hold, finding sanctuary in a London house above a canal. Although Richard doesn't follow them, he seeks revenge and years later, when all three converge amid the conflict in East timor, he is implicated in the book's tragic climax.

Mark Lee is a journalist, playwright and novelist. He worked as a foreign correspondent in Africa for Reuters and The Daily Telegraph and was in Uganda during its civil war. He was expelled for writing about military genocide and later wrote his first novel, The Lost Tribe (Picador, 1998), drawing on his experiences. It will soon be made into a film, directed by Walter Hill and starring John Cusack. Mark Lee lives in LA with his family, but travels extensively.
