This 18th Xanth story begins way down upon the Swan Knee River, the home of a gargoyle called Gary. Transformed from a winged creature composed of granite into a human being, Gary quickly learns to walk on his hind legs. Rather more difficult is coping with an alarming little girl called Surprise.
