Description

Stephen Hawking advanced our understanding of the universe more than any other scientist of his day. He spent his entire life chasing the idea of a 'Theory of Everything', to explain the entire universe, relating to the Big Bang Theory. He said that the aim of scientists is to experience the joy of discovering something that no one has ever known before. Stephen Hawking's career was intrinsically tied to his impact on society. He wrote his book, A Brief History of Time, to explain physics not to just scientists, but to anyone who was interested. It made him one of the most famous scientists in the world. Later in his life, as a sufferer of ALS, Hawking became an inspirational story of living with disability, and chasing your dreams regardless. This colourfully illustrated, beautifully designed biography will captivate young readers and teach them what Hawking learned about black holes and time, how he discovered how the universe began, and why he believed that humans must live on other planets. Through his life, it gives an insight into how Hawking's discoveries have changed our understanding of the world around us forever!

Reviews

"A great addition to any home as well as science & literacy classrooms!" * Educate Empower * It is packed full to the brim with well-researched information trimmed into short, double-page chapters This book will find itself well-used in a library setting, or in a school environment where children are researching Stephen Hawkings and his ground-breaking research. Children with a keen interest in space, physics and big questions about the universe, will find much information in the book to keep their minds busy and exploring well into the future. * Kids Books NZ * "This is the latest book in a series of four remarkable scientists. Anita Croy gives young readers in the age group of 10-13 an understanding of who Stephen Hawking was, beginning with his life as a child, his years at school and the influences that led him to his academic path." * School Days Magazine * "The Scientists Who Changed the World series is a great introduction to scientists and Science. We find that the famous men and women of science were once young boys and girls who played with their peers, often struggled at school, and came from families like ours. They were men and women who had a great intellect and were lucky enough to have their imaginations stimulated by someone. The common thread with these scientists is the burning curiosity which prompted them to seek answers to questions which intrigued them." * Blue Wolf Reviews * Expecting the text to be rudimentary in its approach based upon the heavy use of images and a general intermediate level feel to the language, there was a very pleasant surprise to see how intellectual and yet so accessible the text is. The information is presented logically and with pace meaning that even younger readers won't become disengaged with the information. Of the scientists in recent history who have become household names, surely Hawking is at the top of the list. His wheelchair and disability seemed to accentuate his intellectual prowess rather than inhibit his ability to contribute. * NZ Booklovers * "a very dynamic book in that it covers so many aspects relating to the cosmos but it is also a book that 'opens a door' to those students aged 9 to 14 years who are interested in astronomy and space.' * Science Teacher's Association of Victoria *
